Start early

The best time to get ready is early fall. Once storms start, getting a crew up a steep, snowy driveway gets harder.

Seal the house

  • Check weatherstripping and door sweeps
  • Re-caulk gaps around windows and trim
  • Make sure vents and crawlspace screens are intact
  • Close or cover anything that lets cold air or animals in

Protect the water

Frozen pipes are a costly winter problem. Keep heat on at a safe level if the house is empty, cover outdoor faucets, and have a plumber drain the system if you're closing the house fully.

Know where your main water shutoff is, and make sure whoever checks on the house does too.

Outside

  • Put snow stakes along driveways and paths
  • Walk the deck and railings
  • Clear gutters and pine needles
  • Move hoses and outdoor furniture

Plan for while you're away

Have someone local who can check the house after big storms or power outages, and keep their contact info handy for your manager or neighbors.
