Two states, two sets of rules
The lake sits in both California and Nevada. California's Contractors State License Board (CSLB) and the Nevada State Contractors Board both regulate who can do what work. The details and dollar limits differ between states and change over time.
Usually handyman work
- Small repairs and punch lists
- Like-for-like fixture swaps
- Patching and painting
- Minor carpentry and trim
Usually licensed-contractor work
- Structural changes and additions
- New electrical circuits and panels
- New plumbing and gas lines
- Roof replacement
- Larger jobs above the state's limit for unlicensed work
How to check
You can look up a California license on the CSLB website and a Nevada license on the Nevada State Contractors Board website. Ask for the license number for any larger job, and check that it covers the type of work.
If you're unsure, ask. We'll tell you up front if a job needs a licensed contractor.
